Innovation + KM - Workshop

Introduction :

Chaired by the chief executive, the Task Force on Economic Challenges has announced recommendations on promoting the development of Six Economic Areas, including Innovation and Creative Industries. The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan, has also announced that the SAR Government will focus on four strategies to promote innovation and technology development: (a) establishing a first-class technology infrastructure, (b) supporting applied research and development projects, (c) promoting innovation and culture, (d)strengthening  scientific and technological cooperation with the Mainland.  To echo this initiative, AMC is timely launching this "Innovation + KM" workshop to support leaders from different industries on developing innovation and taking advantage of KM within their organizations.

Due to globalization and increasing competitiveness in today's business environment, innovation should not be limited to scientific research and creative industries.  Every business has to embark on continuous innovation to get away from the ‘Red Sea’ and open up their ‘Blue Ocean’.

Just citing a few successful examples, local and overseas, to illustrate:

· Apple Computer introduced the Macintosh personal computer in 1984 setting a new benchmark for the industry. Its innovation train continued to roll on, and in 2001, trend-set the iPod. In 2007, Apple Computer set another benchmark in a different sector with the iPhone. All these products help maintain Apple Computer’s innovative leadership position and gain huge profit for the company.

· In 1985 Dell Inc. took the lead through introducing a brand new business model – ‘mass customization’ – to its customers.  This innovative strategy made Dell at one time the No.1 PC seller in the world.

· LG Electronics of S. Korea cooperated with Prada in January 2007 and introduced the first crossover mobile phone, quickly enhancing its market eminence and seriously impacting its key competitor Samsung, the market leader.

· Hong Kong also takes pride in its Octopus Card system. Advanced countries like Britain and the Netherlands are all adopting its proprietary system technology.
